DT | Mentor Upstate Training

August 13, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Downtown Campus, 101 West McBee Ave.
Greenville, SC 29601 United States

Could something as simple as mentoring a child really change things for them? The answer is yes. The children in our schools who need mentors are the same children who are identified as “at-risk” in other arenas. Whether they experience the impacts of foster care, the instability of homelessness, or the challenges that come from never quite getting ahead, children and youth in our communities are living at-risk. They are vulnerable, and they need someone like you now so that they do not become a statistic later. Mentor Upstate is working in local schools and throughout our community to connect these under-resourced children to mentors. Join us at the Downtown campus on August 13, from 7:00-8:00pm for an upcoming training to become a mentor for youth. This training is hosted by Mentor Upstate. Please register using the link below.

May 2020

Outreach | Online | Foster & Adopt Monthly Parent Training

May 14, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Many of us have fostered and many of us have lost that child back to their family, into another foster home or into an adoptive home. Foster families can feel a substantial loss when a child in their care leaves - even when the foster family was ready for the child to leave. In this training, foster families and child advocates come together for one and a half hours, where we share and gain more closure, saying goodbye to the children who were in our lives for a brief time. Tara Posner will be hosting this training, and we are so glad she can offer this conversation virtually! Tara graduated from USC with a masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and has been an LPC for the past 16 years. She has worked in agencies, schools and private practice. We look forward to being encouraged and equipped in facing losses through our time with her.

Outreach | Online | Foster & Adopt: Monthly Parent Training

Thursday, June 10 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Upstate Foster & Adoptive families are invited to join us virtually for our next monthly parent training on attachment. Attachment is defined as a reciprocal relationship between two individuals. In infancy, children begin to develop attachment with their primary caregivers. These relationships have a profound impact on the child's emotional, psychological, and physical development. Additionally, the child's ability to trust and his or her view of the world is predicated on these relationships. When these relationships are unstable or disrupted, attachment disorders can develop. Through this training, Sam Cann, MA, LPC will speak on attachment styles, attachment disorders, how to provide stability, and how to support healthy attachment with children of all ages. Register through June 8 to receive the virtual meeting link by email the week of this training.

Outreach | Informational Meeting: Fostering, Adoption, Guardian ad litems

Thursday, September 9 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Taylors Campus, 2701 Wade Hampton Blvd
Greenville, SC 29615 United States

We are all called to care for vulnerable children around us, but some may be called to step into a child's life more directly with love and compassion. It may be overwhelming to know where to begin with fostering, adoption, or being a Guardian ad litem. We want to help you find out more and process your next steps. Join us on September 9 to learn about how you can make a difference in a child's story, current needs across the Upstate, and how to get started. Our guest speakers will be: Margaret Richardson with SC Region 1 Adoptions, Kaley Linquist of Fostering Great Ideas who serves as Director of Foster Parent Recruitment and Support, and Sylvia Walker who is the Greenville County Coordinator for GALS (guardian ad litem). We are excited to provide this opportunity for many of your questions to be answered and to offer any support we can. Childcare will be provided, so be sure to register any children after you have completed your own registration through the link below.
