At Lazarus’ tomb, Jesus joins our lament—identifying with our grief and anger at the brokenness of the world. However, he embodies the truth that death is fleeting and life is eternal. Jesus came into this world and lived under its brokenness in order to provide us a way out through faith in his life, death, and resurrection.
Application

  1. Consider the idea that God gives us things—both good and difficult—that are not for us or about us. Why is it challenging for us to view our suffering through this lens? How have you seen this truth play out in your life?

  2. The Bible is clear that you cannot live the Christian life apart from obeying Jesus. Have you ever obeyed Jesus when you didn’t fully understand a situation? How did that grow your faith? Are there areas in your life where you know God is calling you to obey right now?
